More information
Key criteria for the selection of a plaza name include:
- Names must not duplicate, or be too similar to, existing road or place names within the local area or surrounding council areas.
- Names should be easy to read, spell and pronounce.
- Names should have relevance to the local heritage, history, culture, environment or community of Neutral Bay or the wider North Sydney area.
- Names that recognise Aboriginal heritage are encouraged where appropriate and will be reviewed in consultation with Aboriginal stakeholders.
- Names should reflect inclusivity and diversity and avoid being offensive, commercial or inappropriate.
For names commemorating a person:
- The person should have made a significant and positive contribution to the local community.
- The person must have been deceased for at least 12 months.
- Where possible, consent from the person’s family should be sought.
All suggestions will be assessed against Council’s Road and Place Naming Policy, the Geographical Names Board of NSW Place Naming Policy and NSW Addressing Policy requirements.
At the conclusion of the consultation period, proposed names will be reviewed and a preferred name will be presented to Council for consideration. If endorsed, the name will then be submitted to the NSW Geographical Names Board for formal approval.
