The proposed locations will be exhibited for a minimum of 28 days. Council will review feedback from residents and stakeholders before presenting a further report with recommendations on the final locations.
Council is seeking community feedback on a proposal from EVX Australia to install 27 publicly accessible kerbside electric vehicle chargers across the North Sydney local government area. The proposal involves dual-port chargers mounted on existing Ausgrid electricity poles, with each charger serving two adjacent parking spaces reserved for electric vehicles while actively charging.
No. Council has only endorsed the 27 shortlisted locations for public exhibition. The Council will consider community feedback alongside technical and operational assessments before making a final decision. A further report will be presented to Council following the consultation period.
North Sydney is a high-density urban area where many residents live in apartments or homes without access to off-street parking. Public EV charging infrastructure helps provide equitable access to charging for residents, workers and visitors who cannot easily charge at home, while supporting the transition to lower-emission transport and Council's climate objectives.
Council assessed the proposed site against its Electric Vehicle Charging on Public Land Policy and reviewed it with its Traffic and Transport and Sustainability teams. Considerations included:
Following assessment, 12 of the original 39 proposed locations were removed, leaving 27 locations considered suitable for community consultation.
The proposal includes 27 dual-port chargers across the LGA. Each charger can serve two vehicles, resulting in up to 54 dedicated EV charging bays across the proposed network.
No. The proposal does not reduce the number of available parking spaces. Existing parking bays will be converted into dedicated EV charging bays, with all assessed locations showing no net change in general parking spaces.
The bays are reserved exclusively for electric vehicles while actively charging. Vehicles must be connected to the charger and be charging to use the space.
No. The spaces are signposted as "Electric Vehicles Only While Charging" and are intended solely for vehicles actively using the charging infrastructure.
Drivers are expected to move their vehicle once charging has been completed or when the applicable parking restriction expires, allowing other EV users access to the charger. Existing parking restrictions will continue to apply.
Yes. Existing parking restrictions, including time limits and resident permit requirements, will remain in place and continue to be enforced.
Resident parking permit arrangements will remain unchanged. At locations within permit parking areas, existing permit provisions will continue to apply, noting that the changing bays are reserved for EVs while charging.
Signage and pavement markings will be installed in accordance with Transport for NSW guidelines, the Road Rules 2014 and other relevant legislative requirements. Parking compliance will continue to be enforced through Council's normal parking management process
The proposed units are EVX dual-port chargers mounted on existing Ausgrid electricity poles. This approach minimises visual impacts, reduces the amount of new street furniture required and limits disruption to the public domain.
Council's policy encourages using existing infrastructure wherever possible to minimise footprint and visual impact in the streetscape. Using existing Ausgrid poles reduces construction requirements and helps preserve public amenity.
The proposed chargers are Level 2, 22kW AC chargers with two charging ports per unit. Charging time will vary depending on the vehicle model, battery size and charging conditions.
Yes. Users are required to provide their own charging cable to connect their vehicle to the charger.
Charging sessions are initiated through the EVX mobile application. The chargers also support RFID access. EVX will manage payment arrangements directly.
Charging fees are determined by EVX and may change over time. Current pricing information will be available through the EVX app and charging platform.
Each charger will display a 24-hour customer support phone number. The Charge Point Operator is responsible for responding to customer enquiries, faults and maintenance requests.
The proposal uses pole-mounted chargers that require users to bring their own cable. Council's policy requires charging infrastructure to maintain clear and unobstructed access paths, meet accessibility requirements and not negatively impact public access or safety.
There is no capital cost to Council. All costs associated with installation, operation, maintenance, electricity supply, signage, line marking, customer support, insurance and eventual removal of the infrastructure will be paid by EVX.
Electricity is supplied through a dedicated meter held by EVX and billed directly to the company. The chargers are not connected to Council's electricity supply.
The chargers will be owned, operated and maintained by EVX Australia under a licence agreement with Council.
EVX is responsible for all maintenance, repairs and operational management of the charging infrastructure.
Under Council's policy, the Charge Point Operator is responsible for decommissioning the infrastructure, disconnecting services, recycling components where possible and restoring the site to its original condition.
Community feedback is an important part of the assessment process. Council will review submissions alongside technical, safety, accessibility and planning considerations before making a final decision on whether individual locations proceed.
Yes. Community members are welcome to suggest alternative locations during the consultation period. Any suggested location would need to be assessed against Council's Electric Vehicle Charging on Public Land Policy, including safety, accessibility, parking impacts, electrical supply availability and public amenity considerations.
