Ilbery Reserve Playground Upgrade

Feedback closes on Wednesday 25 November 2026

Help shape the future of Ilbery Reserve Playground

North Sydney Council plans to renew and upgrade Ilbery Reserve Playground, and we want to hear your thoughts on two concept designs for the playground.

Located on Barry Street next to the Neutral Bay Club, the playground was constructed in 2014 and is now due for renewal. The upgrade offers an opportunity to improve the playground's safety, accessibility, and range of play experiences while retaining Ilbery Reserve's leafy character.

Earlier this year, we asked the community what mattered to them when planning the playground's renewal. Your feedback, together with input from Council's Access and Inclusion Committee, has helped inform two concept design options.

Now we'd like to know which option you prefer and what you think could be improved.

What is the project about?

Ilbery Reserve Playground is due for renewal. The existing rubber surfacing is in poor condition and improvements to the equipment and layout are required to meet contemporary safety, accessibility and functional requirements.

The upgrade provides an opportunity to create a more contemorary, inclusive and accessible playground for children of different ages and abilities, while retaining the established character of the Reserve. The project also considers improved seating, supervision and access, as well as durable and sustainable materials.

What you have told us

Counicl undertook intial community consultation from 26 July to 23 August 2026 to understand how people use Ilbery Reserve Playground and what they would like to see considered as part of its renewal.

Feedback highlighted a number of priorities, including:

  • better separation between the playground and off-leash dog area.
  • improved accessibility and pedestrian access
  • more inclusive and varied play opportunties
  • additional seating and picnic facilities
  • improved drainage and turf conditions
  • retaining mature trees, shade and the existing character of the Reserve
  • improvements to the drinking fountain and supporting amenities.

Council's Access and Inclusion Committee also identified accessibility and inclusion considerations, including accessible parking and access routes, wheelchair-accessible play opportunities, quiet spaces, tactile wayfinding, and appropriate separation from the off-leash dog area.

This feedback helped inform the two concepts we are now asking the community to consider.
