Help shape North Sydney Council's Draft Financial Investment Policy

North Sydney Council is seeking community feedback on its Draft Financial Investment Policy.

The policy sets out how Council invests public funds, ensuring surplus money is managed responsibly, securely and in accordance with legislative requirements. It provides a framework for balancing investment returns with the need to protect public funds, maintain sufficient cash flow and manage financial risks.

The draft policy reflects current NSW legislative requirements and guidance. It establishes clear principles for investment governance, risk management, reporting and oversight.

Council invites residents, businesses and community members to review the draft policy and provide feedback.

About the Draft Policy

Council holds funds on behald of the community and is responsible for ensuring these funds are invested prudently and responsibly.

The Draft Financial Investment Policy aims to:

  • provide a framework for investing Council funds while considering risk, security and liquidity.
  • ensure compliance with the Local Government Act 1993, Local Government (General) Regulation 2021 and Ministerial Investment Order.
  • establish clear standards for investment decision making and oversight.
  • protect public funds through sound risk management practices.
  • promote transparency, accountability and good governance in the management of Council's investment portfolio.

What does the policy cover?

The draft policy includes provisions relating to:

  • prudent and responsible investment practices
  • ethical conduct and management of conflicts of interest
  • authorised and prohibited investments
  • risk management and diversification requirements
