Why is Council developing this Policy?
The Local Government Act 1993 (NSW) requires councils to take reasonable steps to help ensure goods and services procured by and for councils are not the product of modern slavery and to report annually on those actions.
The Draft Modern Slavery Policy provides a formal framework to support Council's obligations and strengthen ethical procurement and risk management practices.
The Policy supports Council's commitment to:
- Protecting human rights.
- Identifying and managing modern slavery risks.
- Promoting ethical and responsible procurement practices.
- Supporting transparency and accountability.
- Encouraging continuouse improvement throughout Council's operations and supply chains.
What does the Draft Policy cover?
The Draft Modern Slavery Policy outlines how Council will:
- Identify and assess modern slavery risks in its operations and supply chains.
- Apply due diligence processes when procuring goods and services.
- Work with suppliers to improve practices and reduce risks.
- Provide reporting pathways for concerns or suspected instances of modern slavery.
- Support appropriate responses and remediation where harm is identified.
- Deliver employee awareness and training.
- Monitor, review and continuously improve its approach to managing modern slavery risks.
