Disability Inclusion Action Plan 2026-2030

The DIAP will outline North Sydney Council’s commitment to ensuring everyone in our community is actively working toward an inclusive and accessible community. A community where the human rights and diversity of all people with disability are recognised, respected and celebrated. 

This plan will help ensure our LGA and our organisation are accessible and inclusive, and people with disability are provided with services and facilities that enable them to participate fully in the community. 

It focuses on 4 key directions to build a more inclusive and accessible city for everyone: 

1. Develop positive community attitudes and behaviours towards people with disability through community awareness and education. 

2. Create more liveable communities for people with disability through improving the environment and services. 

3. Achieve more meaningful employment for people with disability through inclusive employment practices and education. 

4. Provide more equitable access to mainstream services for people with disability through better systems and processes and access to information. 

All NSW local governments are required to deliver rolling 4-year Disability Inclusion Action Plans (DIAPs) under the Disability Inclusion Act 2014 (NSW). Each DIAP is a key tool for Council to achieve its goal of making North Sydney an accessible and inclusive community. 
  
The current DIAP  period commenced in 2022 and will end in 2026, at which time the 2026-2030 DIAP will commence. To ensure that Council has a new DIAP ready for delivery from 1 July 2026, we are running community consultations to gather feedback from people with disability, carers, service providers, as well as the general community. 

The DIAP will guide practical actions Council can take — for example improving footpaths and public spaces, providing accessible communication, ensuring events are inclusive, and raising community awareness about disability inclusion. 

The DIAP is for people with disability, their families and carers, and the whole community. By removing barriers and creating fairer opportunities, everyone benefits. 

We want the plan to be shaped by lived experience. The best way to make sure the DIAP reflects real needs and priorities is to hear directly from people with disability, carers, service providers and the wider community. 

Everyone is welcome. We especially encourage people with disability, families, carers and support workers to share their experiences and ideas. Residents, people who work or study here, and visitors to North Sydney are also invited to participate. 

No. While the DIAP focuses on inclusion for people with disability, everyone’s perspective is valuable. You might be a family member, a carer, a service provider, or a community member who has ideas about making North Sydney more inclusive.

An Easy Read version of the survey will be available from Monday 29th of September to support easy completion of the survey. Please contact Council and let us know what you need. We will do our best to provide the survey or information in a way that works for you.

Yes. You can ask a family member, carer, support worker or friend to help you.

This consultation will identify community priorities in relation to the four focus areas and will help to define the actions Council will take to produce improved outcomes for people with disability. 

All feedback captured during this stage of the community consultation relating to the Disability Inclusion Action Plan will be taken into consideration. All feedback will be reviewed and used to help in the drafting of the DIAP 2026 - 2030 ahead of a formal public exhibition period.

Yes. A summary of community feedback will be shared through the report that will go to Council for endorment of the Draft DIAP for further community consultation.

Council will review all feedback, draft the new DIAP, and present it to the community and Council for approval. 

The new DIAP will be completed and adopted by June 30th, 2026.
